[Vwdiesel] Amsoil

Chris,
While I can't comment on Amsoil, I've been delighted with Shell Rotella
Synthetic, which is Diesel specific. There have been enough positive
comments on Synthetics that when it became available here I tried it out of
curiosity, having used Rotella Dino for years.
Cold weather starting was the main recommendation and I found the
Rotella Synthetic to be a boon. I drive a plow truck, and with our wet
winter here, the car was parked out in the mess for extended periods. Upon
cold startup after that, the engine seemed to spin over more easily, and the
oil pressure warning light went out within about three seconds instead of
flickering endlessly while my heart stopped.
The stuff went on clearance, so I bought a bunch of it and started using
it full time. Early this spring, I took it in for a tbelt, thermostat, &
water pump change and my mechanic remarked that the valve train was clean
enough to eat off of, which could only be attributed to the oil.
Unfortunately, this caused a feeding frenzy at Walmart's clearance rack,
as he and much of his family drive Diesels, too. :)
I'm still not comfortable with extended drain intervals, though, but
realize that quarterly/ 3k mi. changes are a waste of oil. I've switched to
3x/ yr., which is still probably not economically optimal, but I can buy a
whole lot of oil for the price of a new engine.
HTH,
Scott Kair
