Hi Sandy;
We have had the 1.9L IDI diesel since 1993 in the Golf & Jetta up until 1997. Then
the TDI came in the Jetta only for 1997, 1998 and 1999 in the A3 body style, there
were no A3 Golf TDIs in Canada for 1998 or 1999 as far as I know. The Passat had
the 1.9 L IDI in 1993 mainly in the sedan, there are a few rare wagon models around
that were used by VW Canada as demo models. The same engine was also
available in 1995 in the Passat GLS in sedan and wagon. The Passat was also
available in Canada with the TDI in 1996 & 1997 in sedan and wagon. There were
no Passat TDIs in 1998 in Canada in the B5 body style even though it came close
and was listed in the Government Fuel Economy Guide, VW of A decided not to
bring it in to North America due to a perceived lack of interest in the US market so
they seemed to think the Canadian market would be the same. The Eurovan had the
2.4 L IDI 5cyl diesel from 1993 to 1997 in the EuroVan 7 passenger, the Westfalia
Camper from 1993 to 1995 and the long wheel base Transporter panel van from
1993 to 1997.
The important date for the IDI diesel in Canada was December 1997, VW couldn't
import any 1998 models with that type of engine due to emission controls. They
sold a few Transporters up till 1997 but couldn't justify the C$1million cost to make
them TDI and OBDII certified for just the Canadian market otherwise we would have
had the 102hp 5cyl TDI in the EuroVan and Transporter. With the increase in price
they wouldn't have been able to sell enough to recover their certification costs.
That's the story as I can remember it.

Subject: [Vwdiesel] 1.9 IID
The 1.9 indirectly injected diesel started in 1993, when did it give way to
the TDI?
Was the phase-out over a couple of years, or did the golfs, jettas and
passats all go TDI at the same time?
Was Canada later than the US in going TDI?
Sandy
