  Uh, yeah.  Gun laws.  That's why there are so many of them and they
keep expanding to infringe on the rights of the law abiding.  That's the
problem with a lot of "noise ordinances."  I agree there's not much that's
more annoying than a motorcycle (usually a Harley) with 2' of straight
pipe blatting past you on a nice day.  Rolling the windows up doesn't
really help!
  We had a noise ordinance or two locally that the first time I read it, I
knew it'd never stand.  It stated that if whatever could be heard at some
distance then it was citable.  Problem was, from what I remember in
driver's training, your car horn was not legal unless it could be heard
BEYOND that distance.  ;-)  Oops.  It also outlawed lawn mowers, loud
talking, a dog bark and so on. Wind is also a big factor.  The only thing
that'd make sense is dB's at a close distance.  Other than the bikes we
don't see much muffler noise here and really it's quite rare from the bikes.
  There's the boom-boom kids but I have to say I hate the laws they try
to come up with against them more than I hate the boom-boom stereos.  :(
