Hi Guys
I just finished my road trip across Canada in my 87 Jetta na diesel. Ottawa
to Vancouver and trips inbetween. Car has 435000 kms (270k miles), I
replaced all the cooling system, ehaust (no muffler just pipes) and added
the turbo diesel oil cooler before I left, along with a complete GTI VR6
suspension front and back. The trip was 11000 kms (7k miles), average econmy
around 64 mpg (54 US gal). I used six liters of oil plus an oil change half
way.Compression on one cylinder is low and the exhaust port was plugged with
soot from oil consumption. Worst fuel tank was 1000kms on 50 liters (625
miles on 13 US gal), best tank 1400kms on 50 liters (875 miles on 13 US gal)
going 90-100 km/hr (55-60mph). I had turned down the fuewl screw so I could
run full throttle without worries in the BC mountains. At times it I had my
foot to the full for 15 kms or more, I didn't want to worry about EGTs
getting to high, especially with an old motor. I have the car loaded with
six pairs of skis, equipement, all tools just incase, luggage for three for
a month you get the picture. Yes, the motor is tired but I made the trip
fine and got breat economy to boot. The upgraded suspension made the drive
so easy, no bouncing or jarring over big bumps just easy crusising, the
front sits an inch higher for easier oil changes and handles speed/corners
like a new car. I forgot how good a long distance car these were (also own a
2000 Jetta TDI auto), the economy was way better then the TDi and way more
comfortable to sit in. Anyways, enough OT babble,
Greg
