[Vwdiesel] 1.6 TD in the garage...different engine mounts

Sandy,

Do you realize how big of a smile you put on my face this morning? I
was grinning ear to ear when I read your e-mail. I had a suspicion that
the mounts could be swapped out like that, but I wasn't positive.
Swapping them out is nothing for me. I had to do that on the engine that
is in there so I know the procedure and what all is involved.

However, is there a risk of blowing those mounts out with the extra
power put out by the Turbo motor? Are they strong enough? The ones on
the car right now are seriously beefier.

I will likely re-use the front mount from the A2 and put it in place of
the front mount of the A1 diesel engine. That will absorb quite a bit
more of the vibration put out by that power puppy!!!

Mikey

The engines are made to accept both kinds of mounts, but you will have
to
save the mounts from the old engine and bolt them on to the replacement
engine. The blocks have the matching holes.
The big problem is the right hand mount, to go bacwards from an A2 car
(post
84) to an A1, (rabbit chassis) you have to change the plate that both
the
mount and the pump are mounted on. This requires removing the timing
belt,
cam sprocket, belt tensioner, pump sprocket, etc. and pump.

I did it the other way on my 87, when I put a TD from an 83 in the 87.
In
that case, I just cut off the right mount, and bolted the mounts from
the
old A2 engine comming out, to the A1 engine going in. The blocks all
have
the bolt holes for either type of mount.

I dont think the sub-frame from the A2 (post 84) will fit the A1 body.

So you have a bit of work ahead of you, but it's all bolt work.
It's no different than a pump replacement or timing belt replacement.
