[Vwdiesel] Fuel hose routing help.

89 uses a pre-heat valve in the filter - this re-circulates return line
fuel in the filter below 5C or therabouts to help prevent waxing or
gelling.

The correct routing for models with pre-heat is:

feed line from tank (this is the larger diameter pipe) to filter inlet.
Filter outlet goes to pump inlet - banjo at lower right front of pump (11
in picture)

return line from pump (top of pump) goes to pre-heat valve on filter
(arrow on vlave indicates correct flow)  Other end of valve is return line
to tank (smaller pipe.)

It sounds like someone has swapped your filter for one without preheat
valve.  The routing is similar, except that the return from the pump goes
straight into the return line to the back of the car (smaller pipe.)

Leaks at the supply line allow air into the system, which will make for
hard cranking, warm or cold.  Leaks at the return side can allow air to
enter the system as well, especially if the factory check valves have been
removed (A2/A3 only)
