Acetylene is interesting stuff. In that big orange
bottle sitting in the torch caddy, it is not
compressed. It is disolved in acetone, I believe. If
compressed, it will explode. I read this in a 1917
college chemistry book and the pictures look amazing
like today's torch rigs. Spelunkers (sp)? i.e. people
who explore caves, sometimes use carbide lamps. You
can get cans of calcium carbide (just add water) at
outdoor outfitters, and some hardware stores. But its
fairly expensive. The reaction with water makes
acetylene.
