Doyt:
I bought my '85 Jetta TD in 1990 from a private party
in Vienna (Northern) Virginia and I paid $4650 for it,
too much, I thought. Right at, or a little above, Blue
Book value. But I had to have it. The fellow selling
it was in the military and was being sent to Europe.
Funny thing is that he was the first owner and bought
it new, or as a demo, in Ohio at a VW dealer. I have
to check the paperwork, but I think it was a dealer in
Cleveland. I was appalled though that about a week
later I noticed it was burning a quart of oil every
750 miles! The car only had 56,000 miles on it, and
the PO had records of fairly regular (5,000 - 7,000
mile) oil changes with an occassional missed one. I
was perplexed. I think it may have had a broken ring
when I bought it. At 200,000 miles I took the engine
apart, and sure enough, the #4 top ring was broke in
two.
