One night, sometime before kids, when I had time to run around and have fun,
I was flying back from Pennsylvania, and about 50 miles out from home
a fire was visible. I was at 5500 feet, about 5000 feet above ground at
my destination. As I got closer, the fire grew. Turned out it was a
propane depot, with thousands of 100# tanks. Tanks venting were burning
the venting, and heating up adjacent tanks, which in turn would vent.
At the peak of this, the flames appeared as if they were above my aircraft.
About 5 miles away from the fire, as I was landing at my home airport,
the heat of the fire could be felt in the aircraft. Apparently, the fire
caused most of the tanks to be emptied and destroyed. Very impressive.
Watching this, and watching a motorhome burn and light off the propane tanks
have been influential factors in avoiding propane injector systems.
