I am a vol fireman and heard the propane tank lecture last week.

Modern tanks are designed with a pressure relief to vent off pressure if it
builds beyond a certain pressure. The tank is not supposed to explode. We were
instructed only to cool the tank and it would eventually stop venting.  There
real danger of propane tanks is when the propane leaks, flows downhill and
collects. Pooled propane is an explosion hazard.
