In Ontario diesel trucks over 4500kg GVWR are required to test anuually
opacity, snap idle and high idle. Diesel passenger cars are currently
only tested if they're less than 20 years old and greater than 3 years old
and the owner lives in one of the areas of the province that has emissions
testing. This test is only smoke at idle though (no snap idle even.) I
don't even think an opacity measurement is used - I think that the
inspector simply watches the exhaust for 5 minutes and makes a pass or
fail! I live 20 km north of the cut-off for emissions testing, with no
plans for it to expand into my area, so I don't have personal experience.
