as far a lube goes when inserting pistons and rings, i use STP straight.
done this to gasser motors though.  acid flux brush the inside of the ring
compressor and then slip it over the piston.

others may have other home remedies out there.

i use STP as an assembly lube. nice thing is that its a bit tacky so it
won;t run everywhere while you get things together. i can be a pain to work
with because it is so tacky: it will pick up every piece of dirt that you
missed/or didn;t clean!
