[Vwdiesel] thermostat & water pump sources and temp gauge

Since my last post about engine running cold I did some investigations and I
come up with this:

I'd measured the coolant temp in expansion tank: 89, 5 - 91 deg celsius.
I'd grounded the red-yellow wire from the temp sensor and the gauge climbed
up to 110 deg celsius.
the glow plugs are not functioning.

So I think the temp sensor is down. In my A3 1,9 TD (AAZ engine) the sensor
has 4 pins. 2 brown(ground) 1 red-yellow(temp gauge) and one white-blue
(glow-plug). At the local VW dealer the price is 40$!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Since it
is only a Thermistor I find the price outrageous! I am servicing heating
boilers and a temp sensor end user cost is about 4 US$!

The sensor is located on the plastic manifold on the front of the head. On
the hose between the head and the radiator there is another sensor with two
pins. Does anyone know what this sensor does?
