Bob,
The same thing happened in my '85 'Rocco a few years ago. I found that
the inner race & roller cage had decided to squirm down the column shaft. It
could be tapped back up into position, but wouldn't stay put.
Temporary fix that is still working fine today: tap bearing up into
position on steering shaft, then open up a small hose clamp & slip over
column. Tighten hose clamp against bottom bearing, now bearing doesn't
squirm down the column. Fix took all of 10 minutes.
