you by chance see what kind of tool the used for removing seal with the
shaft in ??? have a gut feeling they do it only with the shaft out .
Hagar.
This seal can be changed in the driveway (better in the garage) without
taking the pump off the car, with simple tools. The seal costs about $6US
($9CA) and is available at most diesel injection shops. Just tell them it's
a Bosch VE pump on an old volks, he'll know.
Here's how I did mine.
You will need a gear puller to pull the pump sprocket.
The sprocket is cast iron and will shatter if pried or hammered on.
(recommend you catch the sprocket on the inside of the holes next the shaft hub
pulling on the outside rim might break it).
catch the woodruff key that will fall out of the slot in the shaft, note
order of any washers so they can be replaced in order.
You can now see the shaft seal, a press fit metal ring with a rubber
insert that runs on the shaft (a circle within a circle.)
Take a small 1/8", 3/16" flat screwdriver, heat it with your propane torch to
red heat, and quickly bend a 90o "hook" on the end of it.
when cool, carefully push the hook into the seal,
BEING CAREFULL NOT TO LET IT TOUCH THE SHAFT AND SCRATCH IT!!!!!!!!!
Get the hook behind the metal part of the seal, and pull it out.
Very important not to let the screwdriver scratch the shaft.
The seal will pull out easily.
press the new seal into place, flange inward, with 2 fimgers, until
it is started into the hole in the pump body.
Then using a deep socket, (I think I used a length of 1/2" copper water pipe)
carefully tap it in until it bottoms.
reassemble the sprocket, key etc. replace the timing belt,
Reset belt tensioner so you can just barely slide the belt back and forth on
the pump sprocket with both thumbs. Use a tension gauge if you have one :-)
Worked for me.
