I forgot, you also asked about trans oil. I'd recommend either Redline MTL
or Amsoil gear oils. My '85 Jetta TD has 485k kms on original
transmission running on Redline MTL, and still shifts like a dream, even in
winter. My Vanagon has the top of the line Amsoil GL1-5 gear oil since I
felt my new R&P deserved the best oil out there. Amsoil has a straight GL-
4 gear oil, full synthetic that is also quite reasonable in price ($5.80 US/qt),
I'm thinking of putting some in my new Jetta since Redline MTL is up to
about $20 CDN now. Since synth. gear oil is good for at least 100-200k
kms, and you only need 2 qts, price is not such a big deal. I'd say go with
whichever you can find in your area. Just *don't* use a dino oil - you'll hate
it when cold!
