I do have a simple press-on replacement for the relay shaft ball:

And yes, that is one of the key  parts of the A2 linkage.

To check 5th, have someone push the shfter into 5th gear, then by hand, under the hood, try moving the rear and forward selector
rods and see if you can push them farther into gear.  If so, then the linkage is not centered properly and/or you still have
some excess play in the system.
