Back in 1985, I tried to buy a new Jetta TD, and all the dealers had sold
their single demonstrator. None were to be had.
I looked for two years to find a used 85 Jetta TD, and jumped on the first
classified that showed up. It was January, 1988. I raced everyone else to
get my cash into the hands of the seller, to close the deal. The guy was
being transferred from his job with British Petroleum, from Cleveland to
London, and he couldn't take his car along. He left on a boat, and his wife
stayed behind to sell the car and house.
I gave her the downpayment, remainder to be delivered when clear title was
signed over to me.
She went to her bank to get the title. I drove her there in the Jetta and
sat outside, waiting for her to emerge. Half an hour went by. Nobody came
out. Then a police cruiser pulled up beside me and the officer had me get
out of the car and put my hands on the hood. They searched me for weapons,
and asked why I had stolen the car.
I showed them the cashier's check, made out in the amount of $5,000, to the
owner, and I explained that I was trying to buy the car and had driven the
owner to her bank.
They made some radio calls, and from the other side of the building the
woman emerged, accompanied by an FBI agent. She had gotten turned around in
the bank and had come out on the other side of the building, into a
mirror-image parking lot. She couldn't find her car (and me) and she
panicked, ran back and had the teller call the FBI and police, using the
bank's security lines. An all-points brought the law in about 2 minutes,
and you can imagine the rest of the story. She was very embarrassed. The
officer told me, as he left, that if I had been driving the car (moving)
they would have shot me. Arrrggghhhh!
I almost paid for my 1985 Jetta TD with my life. You may have to take some
risks to get yours. If you find one, RACE for it, and buy it before the
other guy. Then fix whatever is wrong with it. They are rare. Good luck.
Hope you enjoyed the story.
