Hi Guys,

Many thanks for your suggestions so far. Ok, no jumping off the bridge and =
the car is grounded pending further investigation, esp. the crankshaft pull=
ey! Whatever, this doesn't seem to be heading far an easy & low-cost fix!

As a matter of interest, is the crankshaft pulley wheel disturbed for any r=
eason when the cambelt is changed? If so then the belt change was done by m=
y local VW dealer. Otherwise, the problem would be there from the beginning=
unless something happened during the first owner's time with the vehicle. =
If when I do the check & find it is loose, could I tighten it up temporaril=
y myself? i.e. at the mid point of the slack when turning the pully one way=
& then the other ... hmmnn, sounds a bit ropey, but might prevent the key =
from shearing off and causing horrendous damage?

I'll search for the crankshaft pulley info at Fred's although my similar po=
sting there has so far got 20 reads & no reply. Have also just posted to vw=
diesel at vwfans.com with a synopsis of your responses.

Looks like I'll have to instigate an emergency re-instatement of my old Peu=
geot 505 petrol (guzzling) estate, after fixing a few items & getting it te=
ted.

As the key is designed not to take any shear load, someone didn't tighten t=
he
bolt in the nose of the crankshaft sufficiently high enough to grip the
pulley. Who last did that bolt up? VW?

There was a cautionary statement / warning on Fred's (www.tdiclub.com)
about
the key in the crankshaft pulley shearing and allowing the crank and pistons
to go out of time with the cam and pump.

Hi Mike
Whatever you do Don't jump off the bridge. If anything, push the car
over but don't jump. It isn't worth it.
