Hi Guys,
Many thanks for your suggestions so far. Ok, no jumping off the bridge an=
d the car is grounded pending further investigation, esp. the crankshaft pu=
lley! Whatever, this doesn't seem to be heading far an easy & low-cost fix!
As a matter of interest, is the crankshaft pulley wheel disturbed for any=
reason when the cambelt is changed? If so then the belt change was done by=
my local VW dealer. Otherwise, the problem would be there from the beginni=
ng unless something happened during the first owner's time with the vehicle=
. If when I do the check & find it is loose, could I tighten it up temporar=
ily myself? i.e. at the mid point of the slack when turning the pully one w=
ay & then the other ... hmmnn, sounds a bit ropey, but might prevent the ke=
y from shearing off and causing horrendous damage?
I'll search for the crankshaft pulley info at Fred's although my similar =
posting there has so far got 20 reads & no reply. Have also just posted to =
vwdiesel at vwfans.com with a synopsis of your responses.
Looks like I'll have to instigate an emergency re-instatement of my old P=
eugeot 505 petrol (guzzling) estate, after fixing a few items & getting it =
teted.

Hi Mike
Whatever you do Don't jump off the bridge. If anything, push the car
over but don't jump. It isn't worth it.
