Is it possible that the clutch plate springs have softened and rattlely...and
one fallen out?

Otherwise can you get the noise whilst stationary? Try t opin point the source
by listening with a stick pressed against diff parts of engine....need to be
moving ... try a length of garden water hose under bonnet(hood) again in
strategic places and other end in  left ear through car window... If only low
speed required? I'd find a quiet spot of road/carpark and get wife to drive
whilst I climbed on top of engine...listening for source...I'd do it for my
$300 car ...for a TDI I'd do it down an interstate!
