[Vwdiesel] 81 Rabbit NA 1.6 problem

Sounds like an alternator belt, but they shouldn't kill the engine, and rarely happen at
steady speeds - usually only when starting from an idle in wet weather. I would
inspect the timing belt carefully, could be either the int shaft has seized, or the
tensioner has seized, causing either of these pulleys to rub against the back of the T
belt. If it is the int. shaft, your oil light will stay on and you will have no brake boost.
Seized tensioners can lead to belt failure eventually (this has happened to me,
although not on a VW). I'm puzzle that the engine died - I can't think of anything that
would cause this, yet allow it to be restarted again, unless current was cut to the fuel
shutoff solenoid. Try turning everything by hand - water pump, alternator, int shaft.
