Shalyn,
Though not a VW, I had a similar experience on my Dodge Caravan.

The left front wheel always had a burning smell to it, and was always
way hotter to the touch than the others.

I went through all of the steps that you did, each with no joy.

Finally as a last ditch effort, I replace the front calipers and have
been problem free ever since. It seems that the oring on the caliper
piston, while providing a seal, also helps retract the piston a wee bit
when letting off the brakes. Mine didn't!

However in your case, I agree with the others, that it must be a MC
problem.
