The Bentley Manual (the same manual that VW Technicians use in VW
dealerships) says to fill the transmission via the speedometer cable. Said
Bentley Manual covers all MK2 VW's from 1985 to 1992. 1975 to 1984 is an
MK1.

Just did a 1984 1.6L turbo -- no problems at all. I would NEVER remove
speedo cable for filling...It looked like it was our resident oil expert
from the great state of Texas who asked must be a vastly different type
car. An old wheelbolt with a hexnut welded on and it is no problem to
get level plug out. Then fill using a piece of aquarium tubing and a
funnel. Changing was no problem --- getting the right oil was. Hagar.
