Yes, GL-4 and GL-5 lubes are different. NEVER use GL-5 lube in a GL-4
transmission.
According to my Bentley Manual, the MK2 transmission holds 1.9 US quarts
(1.8 litres).

Subject vehicle: '91 Jetta TD 5-speed (this is the Cdn MF engine... 68
throbbing HP... not the puny ECO one).
My repair place installed Red Line MT-90... it's SAE 75W90 API GL-4 gear
oil. Apparently GL-4 and GL-5 have different additives which need to be
compatible with the type of gearbox synchronizers.
Drained the old fluid and suctioned the dregs, installed the new thru the
speedo cable. Torx "screw" if memory serves me correct. Used almost the
entire 1 US qt / 0.946 litre.
I noticed an improvement -- smoother winter shifting, easier 1st gear
downshift.
