[Vwdiesel] Power steering pump problem

I have had several unsatisfactory belt situations, where 
belts have shreaded shortly after installation.  In all the cases
I recall, this has happened after installing a "softer" after-market
belt, such as those sold by AutoZone.

Going to VW or Continental belts has always solved the problem.

Regarding Nate's comments below, I concur, although over the years my 
principle bearings to fail have been waterpump, which generally doesn't
need much tension.  In the case of the altenator belt, I tend to 
tighten just enough, so that when full AC is on, with lights and 
defogger, the best doesn't squeal or chirp.  The belts need 
to be restensioned a couple of thousand miles later.  

(My problem with altenators is going through brushes.  My 91 is on
the fifth set of replacement brushes.  Knock on wood, the bearings 
are still fine.)
