Fw: [Vwdiesel] exhaust

Lucky you lot! Over here in the UK we have a terrible smoke test. Goes
something like this ... the exhaust is tested with a probe (opacity test) up
the end and has to be no more than "3" ... (don't exactly know 3 what but my
car just failed with a series of 5-7s. What's terrible is that the test runs
like this.

- Engine oil has to be at least 80C
- Engine is revved to full throttle for three full seconds (that's no load,
throttle stomped to the floor & held there, engine screaming.)
- Up to 6 attempts at this can be made

The dilemma can be that some testers don't (understandably given the
horrendous noise) run to the full 3 seconds and of course the turbo is still
spooling up and if the MAF is a little out of sorts you get overfuelling

On the other hand, with my old dear at 108K miles, could also just be tired
fuel injectors and a mixture of blowby engine oil/oil pooled in the
intercooler ... or a "naughty" chip ... or ...sob!
