It's my understanding that any oil sold nowadays IS detergent, unless
marked otherwise.
My dad bought a '64 Ford Galaxy wagon with a 289 from a junkyard for use as
a mail delivery vehicle when I was a kid. It was an ex-USAF base vehicle,
and had been fed a diet of non-detergent lowest-bidder oil all of it's life.
When he ran detergent oil in it, yes, he did have some problems with garbage
breaking loose - we were stranded at a McDonald's when a chunk made it's way
past the sludged-up oil pump pickup screen and jammed the oil pump rotors,
twisting off the oil pump driveshaft. After replacing the driveshaft and
cleaning the screen, and once the gunk was gone after a few frequent oil
changes, though, it was OK from then on until the timing chain stretched to
the point that it began jumping time on him.
I'm of the opinion that it's best to keep the gunk in suspension and drain
it out rather than let it build up. I must have company, since it's
extremely rare to find non-detergent oil for sale in the first place. My
$.02.....
