A couple of comments. First, I've got pages from a Bosch Diesel
Fuel Injection book about the VE pump here on these web pages:

The book is ISBN 1-56091-542-0, published in 1994 and now out of print.

Second, I suspect the Ford meltdown was caused by the same problem
we can get ourselves into with the VE pump. Putting more fuel in,
means the period of injection is longer. If the point where injection
stops is so late that the fuel is still burning when the exhaust valve
opens, the exhaust temperature will go through the roof. This is
because you've got still burning gases going out into the exhaust.

In our case, the answer is to advance the pump timing so the burning
stops before the exhaust valve opens. All this means, that if you are
playing with the pump and boost, you HAVE to have an exhaust temperature
gauge!
