A much better choice would be one of those Toyota flat-4 diesels,
think they are (were?) made in 2.2L and 2.4L and turbo. They are in
the Preivas, I think. Not that there were ever sold in the US, of
course, but they are definitely available from those used engine
importers -- I was looking at them awhile back.
You could put a couple of small radiators in the upper airscoops on
the bus. Saw one conversion where a guy put a radiator up on the roof
with a custom scoop.
