I remember reading a SAE paper that showed that the 1.6L NA diesel has
slightly over unity volumetric efficiency.

This was due to the design of the induction system.  I think the
intake system produces a 'boost' in pressure by decelerating the
column of air in the intake lines.  This deceleration occurs as the
intake valve closes -- allowing the intake system to stuff air into
the cylinder.  The effect occurred over a fairly broad range of RPM.

Not sure what effect such a small 'boost' has on performance or
mileage.
