probably just a brush getting worn short, or sticking and hanging up.
Take the alt out and have a look under the back cover where this stuff is.
Should be pretty evident than.
Regulator being electronic, usually works, or not.  I have never seen one
that was weak and flaked out under load, that's usually a mechanical
problem.  Like any electronic device, regulators either lose their smoke and
cease to work, or the smoke retention coating holds up, and it works.

I connected a ground wire to the case but still output
voltage drops from 14 to 12.5 when AC is switched on.
Even worse when I connect a battery isolator for an
aux battery in the bed, the voltage drops to 11.5,
hardly building confidence for a long road trip.
Motorola type altenator. What is likely culprit? The
regulator? Hard to fix?
