[Vwdiesel] stuck in 3rd gear

HI all,

   I was driving my 82 Rabbit diesel the other day and I down shifted to 3rd gear.  I came up to the traffic light and I pushed in the clutch to switch to first gear and it wouldn't budge. The car is stuck in 3rd gear.   I tried looking over the linkages and  moving them by hand and they won't budge.  I have had transaxles go having them stick in reverse or inability to get the car in 1st, but never have I had a problem with 3rd.  Anybody, have any suggestions?  The clutch works fine and I changed it about 20,000 miles earlier and at that time I did check the gear lube level.
