Like Loren said an injector could be the WHOLE problem. A leaking or stuck
injector may be noisy and be reason for white smoke.

However your question was how do you tell ? right ?.

So it makes sense to test Glowplugs FIRST. then injectors.

If you have a spare injector or nozzle --that is the simplest to change ----but NOT to test.

Glowplugs are a bag of shit to change --except one. # 4. A PITA job compared to an injector.

But easy as apple pie to test. Chrizzy let us know if you have a block heater. If not
install one NOW.

And could a bad plug make noise on start up ? --bet your ass. Fuel piles up in cylinder
and it will knock like a BIG marble. BUT not for a long time ---so if your noise is there after
a long drive expect the injector.

Could it be the PUMP ? ---- not likely. Read up on pumps here in archives the pump
is important on OLD VW diesels. Do a hillbilly test on pump or just have it redone.

Any of you guys with OLD pumps just let us know and we will tell you how to test
them.-- I found the testing very entertaining ? or a challenge ? maybe.
Simple as a apple pie ---or a piece of cake.

All these problems look so difficult at first ---- then down the road --how could I be so stupid ?
EH ?----happens to most of us.

So back to my old statement ---NO question too stupid here. (in this forum).

Hagar.

PS : Sigrids Passat (gasser) warning light came on ---a trip to dealer ? yes.

The gas cap was not tight. --------crazy stupid system. IMHO.
