[Vwdiesel] New member-block question

Hello,
Chuck from Idaho introduced me to the list.  I am building up an engine for myself and Chuck. I tore apart one of the engines and found the mounting pad for the oil pump missing a piece.  it is the corner that is next to the #4 rod journal and the missing piece extends to the lower oil pump drive bushing, and the bushing is loose in what is
left in the hole.  My first respone is that this block is now a boat anchor.  Is this an accurate assumption?

In way of introduction, my name is Justin Bennett, I live in Roundup Montana, and work as an airframe and powerplant mechanic.  Among my stable of vehicles there is a 79 diesel rabbit, 81 diesel pickup, and a 77 gas rabbit.  All three need at least engines.
