How did the Passenger car diesel come about ? ---and WHY ?

I felt like saying "By Magic" but I better not.  And say by necessity.  It was fuel
price driven.

MB was out of the gate really early ---and when the rest saw it could be done ?
sure why not.

Enter GM  ---- GM had one of the finest diesel divisions in the world. So why in hell
did GM let a gasser guy make a diesel for the Delta 88 ?  .  My answer is simple ---
"Hypnosis"  it can not be stupidity or lack of information.     That guy was one slick
talker. "Bob Dorshimer" or such.    And he was nearly right. He missed by a C hair.

I would give a lot to have a few beers with him. 

Now for the VW guys they were smarter --no diesel Division --but they hired someone.
And they took the time to test things.   And retest things and modify things --before
selling the things.  We know the results ----the finest little diesel in the world. (all around).

Yes even better than the MB dollar for dollar.   One outstanding thing they did was this,
they did not put two exhaust valves side by side.   GM did --Landrover did ---and who else?.

And by luck --when the Distributer pump was invented ? BINGO   a high speed
diesel was possible. And the Volks were off in a cloud of smoke.
My info say's that the VE pump was invented by Chicago Screw Co or something.
Stanadyne to us.   ---VE means distributor.

How good is the VW diesel ?  --let me tell you when Volvo who has one of the worlds
best diesel divisions use it ---that is it. That is a gold medal.

You may get the impression that I like Diesels ? ---yes you are right . (I used to dislike)
