  Most of this line of thinking is about 40 to 50 years old.  When they first 

introduced "detergent" oils, there was enough detergent action to break 
loose enough crud to plug oil passages and pickup screens.  Thus don't 
switch oils.  
  With a diesel it's more critical since you must stick with a "C" rated 
oil no matter what so your choices are limited and it's tougher to find 
something you CAN switch to.  IMO switching between dino and 
synth or back would just be an issue of little things like might leak out 
more/less, use more/less oil, etc.  Nothing major though.
