I wasnt talking about being thicker when I referred to "hang time." I didn't

ramble on to 'splain. I'm talking about residual oil left on the cylinder
walls, etc rather than it being really efficient in running all into the pan
after you shut off the engine and it sits for a day or week or two. I don't
know for a fact but seems the claims have been that synth does a better
job of being there a couple days later so less metal to metal startup.
There's nothing to keep oil suspended in the turbo bearings any more
than the mains, etc. Less actually as the surface area is narrower due
to the bearings being fully groved with holes drilled in the groves.
Loren... I have never lifted a head off/dropped the sump off an engine that didnt have slight lube in the bores or shell bearings that werent stuck on by a film of oil (Unless seized by blockage). Now I've only done maybe 20 engines; but you have attacked more than 10x that number; can you tell me different?...Loren you said:
"Three factors work for you there. "Hang time"
for oil, lubricity/resistance to shearing/whatever and how quick the system
reaches pressure. I believe synthetic excells over dino in all 3"My reply was actually reiterating what you said ... but in re-wording it; it sounds like a paradox:"....So synth. is stickier? Less viscous when cold but more viscous when hot [in comparison with dino]Yet it shears easier? which conventional thinking makes me feel it is thinner? Name something else that is easier to stir (ie shear) yet thicker? Not paint any way ;o)
Seems to be something out of science fiction... I see the winter benefits but is it neccessary in summer? I think the friction differences may be insignificant! Here's a simple test: take a spare rear wheel and hub/stub axle. Set it in a vice clean taper bearing and lube with dino.Spin wheel and count the turns before stationary. Clean bearing and then lube with synthetic...Repeat test. Ok to be thorough; do it on hot days and cold days!Mark(The Miser)UK

Lower friction, lower viscosity, better mileage.
