I cant think of a more important issue that I can contribute to here , than this.

Thousands of smoking Rabbits out there are smoking because the timing ring is not
moving --according to internal pump pressure. Two possibilities ---the ring is stuck
or the pump pressure in not moving timing Piston. To say it differently you may have a tired
pump ---- and yes a tired pump will make her smoke and be lethargic.

This is first hand experience ---not something I read somewhere.

FAQ : Can a complete newbie DIY do a test on pump for little money , and
without removing pump ?

A : YES.

One thing ---please do a bit of reading in archives before you ask questions here.
Put archives on you favorites. The internal pressure on a good pump should be
between about 35 psi and 100 psi. .On a tired pump it is acceptable to simply
leaving cold start knob out all the time. On a tired pump use lots of RPM ---
not lugging it up them hills. And George Allison do turn fueling screw back as
Mark Shepherd suggested. Take her back till you notice lack of power. Small
moves now----very sensitive.-----NO you can not screw anything up.

Wish you could see the difference it all made to my 1982 Rabbit ----hard to
believe how much difference ---getting than timing (dynamic) to work made. It smoked
and was gutless for years----- I did not know that it was not normal. All the VW diesels
I saw here in BC ---smoked like crazy.

Hagar.
