well, i wouldn't call myself an expert, but i sure
remember that pilot bearing in the vanagon engine i
rebuilt! the outer race was seized up in the flywheel
and it took me most of a day to get it out without
damaging the flywheel. it finally came out in about 15
pieces!
i don't know if others are like this, but it was in a
82 vanagon with a 1.6L NA diesel. it was a needle
bearing prelubed from the parts place with what looked
like wheel bearing grease. had an outer race that i
pressed into the flywheel and no inner race - just
rides on the input shaft. there was no seal anywhere.
don't know why, but it's lasted 60k miles without
troubles. (in a vanagon that's about 1/2 the life
expectancy of the engine!) :)
