IMHO --------- on a 1983 Rabbit ----there is ONLY one really good indicator.
Run a small wire from Glowplug buss to a small Indicator light mounted where you can see it.
To be safe put a small inline fuse close to buss.
My Rabbits has exactly that ---it worth every minute it takes to install. The VW
led is garbage ---- Then sooner or later you will see something that Roger Brown
pointed out years ago. The temperature sensor will give quite a performance.
On--off on off ----buzzing and so on. With the light in place you will be able to
detect a welded ON relay ----that will result in a plug meltdown.
It is a piece of cake to test the timer ---
Remember there are two different systems used , old and new..
Old system uses the keyswitch start position to turn plugs off.
New system ---plugs stay on after start ---for "afterglow" VW way of reducing smoke on
the turbo models .. But it works super on NA.
Hagar.
