Thanks to everyone for all the info!
Loren suggested a finding a diesel shop with
a motorvac diesel system, able (willing) to do
the cleaning work on a small (car) diesel. The
detergent and machine seem to be the way to go.
Scott said he was unable to get a bottle of
the cleaning detergent to experiment with :-(
It seems most practical to reset the EGR with
Vag-Com, and leave it alone until it quits.
Perhaps somebody will have "reverse engineered"
an engine cleaner by then.
For what it's worth, the worst fouling seemed
to occur during the first 10,000 miles. The guy
at the VW parts counter mentioned it. He said
they "saw a lot of them" in warranty, and the
repair is *not* covered by VW. Switching to
syn-oil slowed the process somewhat.
Thanks everyone to everyone who replied!
