Yes, my first car was a 1929 2 door (coach) Durant, made in Leaside, Ont.
(susburb of Toronto)
It was wood framed with a thin steel stamped covering. Ruberized fabric
roof. Plain plate glass windows (that shattered into great spears of glass
when broken) Floor was wood boards laid on the steel ladder frame.
Mechanical 4 wheel brakes with no cables, but a cute set of levers to
actuate the front ones.
Nice little 4 cyl continental flat head side valve engine, often seen in
welders, compressors, etc. Might even have showed up in early jeeps. Open
flywheel, Spicer ball and claw coupling to tranny which was bolted to the
frame. I sure had a lot of fun with that car in the late 40's before I got a
driver's licence. We lived in a rural area where a licence was more a
formality at the time.
Vacuum tank on firewall, gravity to carburetor, instead of fuel pump.
Model A ford had an under-cowl tank above your knees, like a piper cub,
gravity to carburetor.
Oh, I forgot, wooden spoke wheels. Tire chains were lengths of hay fork rope
wound around/across the tire through the spokes.
19"x4" tires on demountable (split) rims.
Licence plate and registration was $2 per year
I can remember all this detail, and don't know where I left my keys when I
came in this afternoon.
Sandy
