  If you know your system and aren't doing heavy calculations it's all 
relative.  It doesn't matter if I say the bug I saw is about an inch long 
or about 2 1/2mm long.  It's about I_______I  that big!  12ga wire is 
good for about 20A and 10ga is good for about 40A roughly in house 
wiring.  I don't do it so I don't know for sure but my cousin is an 
electrician 
so he'd know for sure.  If he has to do a metric wired job then he only needs
metric references. 
  If you're engineering something then use whatever system works best for 
you.  I often will convert things to metric, do the calculations and then 
convert 
back to English for relative comparison.
  I don't know the standard on wire or metal gauge but I'm sure it's similar 
to shotgun gauge.  A 12 ga shotgun barrel is the diameter of a ball of which 
12 of that diameter, of lead, will equal 1 pound.  Strange system?  Yes. 
Stupid?  No, it works.  Does it need changed?  Why, it works.  Same 
for wiring.  Is it logical?  It must've been at the time it was contrived.  
Stupid?  No, it works and is consistent.  If it didn't work and we used it  
THEN it'd be a stupid system.  
  Maybe I should convert my speedo to read in furlongs/fortnight and 
calculate engine output in ergs.  ;-)
