  First, usually a chipped tooth or teeth.  Second, adjustment.  Reverse is a 

positive engagement set of gears.  All the others use synchro teeth which 
notch in but require much less travel to engage.  Harder to kick out a gear 
that has much more mesh.  (as I see it anyway.)
