[Vwdiesel] Musings on a Turbo Caddy - Part II

Well, took the caddy out for another 100 mile romp on the highway
today. Since last Saturday I have replaced one heater hose (blew up),
put in the correct sender for the oil temperature gauge (now records
oil temp at 185-190 degrees F instead of 245+), replaced the piece of
"cardboard" that covers the top of the radiator and, as I have
previously posted, replaced the injector nozzles. I have also followed
the advice of several people and cleaned out and resealed the seams
around the base of the truck's top. The old seam sealer was completely
dried out and cracked through. On the road, She ran like a top with
little smoke except on hard acceleration and the turbo will put out
about 11 psi of boost. A close watch on the EGT shows that the truck
runs about 650-750 degrees F but a good solid full throttle romp will
push 1000 degrees but quickly drops when you power back. Water
temperature is really solid at just about a half a notch above midway.
Goes up a bit on hard acceleration but quickly drops back down. I
also checked out the odometer to see if it was as far off as the
speedo. Turns out that the odometer is off by 6% or 6 miles for every
hundred. Figured this out on two 5 miles sections and one 10 mile
section each one was consistent in a 6% error. I guess that is not too
bad. One funny thing did happen today. We stopped at a McDonald's for
lunch and when we came outside, there were two little girls (maybe 5 or
6) pointing at my little Caddy and the massive 4 wheel drive Ford F350
extended cab with about a 18" lift kit on it. They were almost the
same color and the little girls thought that it was funny that there
was a "baby truck" and a "daddy truck"! I commented to my wife that it
was obvious that those guys were simply compensating for short comings
in "other areas" and wasn't it great that I didn't need that kind of
compensation so I could drive a small truck! ;^) Later, Hayden
