[Vwdiesel] speedometer question

HI all,

  This is not a question isolated to diesels, but it is a VW question.   I have several VW's besides my diesel.  My 84 GTI I took off the the stock wide GTI wheels for the winter and put regular p155-80-13 tires on it.  I have also had to replace my speedometer cable this year.  I was told that they used to make several versions of the little plastic gear that goes at the end of the speedometer cable and they used to match with the specific transmission. The bottom line question of this is that with the different tires and the different gear is the speedometer off.  I swear I am going faster then everyone now at what used to be normal speeds.  Any opinions out there.
