I'm hoping that it's just the head gasket. It drives fine, no overpressure,
no overheating, just oil in the reservoir. Anything else I should look for
other than the head gasket/cracked head/cracked block?
Not doing the final retorque can indeed cause a leaky head gasket. Sure
hope that's ALL you find. You'd especially be looking for a collapsed
seal around the oil passage head bolt/stud or a crack in the block at it.
Hopefully all it is, is leftovers from BEFORE he did the head gasket. :)

Just a 12pt normal socket. It's probably std. Raceware's are.

Yeah, the bulges in the head, where the oil returns are won't line up with
the gasket. It'll stick out beyond the head and block. Thing is I've only
seen 3 - 5 notch early gaskets and none to 3 late. The late used to come
in 81 and 82-on varieties. Early ones have small return holes and small
bolt holes. 81 have small bolt holes but large returns. 82 on have large
bolt holes and large return holes.
