[Vwdiesel] alternator(ac vs. non-ac)

Hello,
 
I have a 1981 1.6na diesel rabbit.  It has ac and I am having a charging problem.  I am going to check out the alternator but if it is bad I would like to get rid of the ac setup.  I know there is a different ac bracket I need but what differences is there in the alternator?  Does the non-ac alternator use the same pulley?  Is the shaft longer? Any good places one would recommend for an alternator and parts?
