I'm disappointed to be only getting 39 in my 1.6 TD and to have been 
surpassed by 2000 miles on the odometer.  If I was just a little more 
confident, I'd drive it out on my upcoming trip from TX to NC and catch 
back up to you, but I know too many things that are wrong with the old 
girl.  If the rent car breaks down, I call up the company, act real 
indignant on the phone, and they send around another car.   If the old 
Jetta breaks down a thousand miles away as I have reason to expect it 
might, I cry on the phone to someone, anyone, and pull the liscence tags 
and the VIN, drop a match and stick out my thumb.
